MD, FRCPC

Yan Xu is a hematologist and an Adult Thrombosis Fellow at the University of Ottawa, having completed his medical school at Queen’s University followed by internal medicine residency at the University of Toronto. During his medical training, Yan was struck by the statistic that anticoagulants (commonly known as blood-thinners) are the most common cause of medication-related emergency hospitalizations among older adults in North America. His research program therefore aims to optimize the risks and benefits of anticoagulants in the prevention and treatment of arterial and venous thromboembolism, with a focus on ethnoracial health equity. Specifically, his ongoing research aims to characterize, understand, and address systemic inequities between ethnoracial groups across the spectrum of venous and arterial thrombosis research and clinical care.

We acknowledge that the EqHS Lab is located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg. We have the privilege and responsibility to serve First Nations, Métis and Inuit of many backgrounds and from many treaty lands and to demonstrate respect for Indigenous people’s contributions and culture. We also acknowledge traditional knowledge and healing developed over countless generations.
